About David Martin Agency Inc.
David Martin Agency, Inc. is a privately-held firm founded in 1982 by David A. Martin, CEBS (Fellow). We specialize in employee benefit plans and consulting services. We are a top ten agency in size as reported by Business Journal and one of the largest Minnesota benefit consultants not owned by a bank or national consulting group.

Philosophy
David Martin Agency, Inc. is a salaried organization in which the entire account executive team is paid primarily by salary and not commissions. This strategy discourages an aggressive sales approach to benefit program management and creates, instead, a caretaker approach in a service-oriented environment. We feel this is a key to solid and enduring client relationships.

Staff
Our staff offers many years of professional experience gained from other benefit consulting firms, including international brokerage houses, major insurance carriers, and private business organizations. All our account executives have earned the Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) designation or are now working on it. Since our inception, we have experienced extremely low staff turnover and are able to offer you a stable, committed, and knowledgeable adjunct to your human resources staff. Clientele
Located in Edina, Minnesota, we serve businesses of any size and in any location throughout the United States, providing expertise in group health and welfare plans, individual health plans, retirement plans, financial planning, human resources, and benefit technologies, compliance, and communications. We insure employees in every state of the Union. Our current clients include professional, financial, high-tech, and business service entities, non-profits, manufacturers, schools and colleges, medical clinics, and food service and sales firms.

Industry Recognition
Locally, David Martin Agency, Inc. has been a member of the BCBSM Agent Advisory Board, Medica VP Round Table, and the HealthPartners Work Group. He was recently invited to speak at the 2009 BCBSM Annual Meeting. David is also one of only four benefit consultants in Minnesota routinely invited to the annual BCBSM consortium meeting for key and national accounts. We have been chosen as a BCBSM "Agent of the Year" have also earned the BCBSM mark of distinction to be known as a "Blue Partner" agency. As such, we are provided many resources for client initiatives. We are also a frequently quoted source for local newspapers and magazines.

As an independent consulting firm, we have cultivated many valuable relationships with both carriers and vendors over the years, paying special attention to our operations business partners. They include:

Benefit Advisors Network (BAN)
As an exclusive regional member of BAN, we are afforded national expertise and resources from many distinguished people and organizations including a medical director, a pharmacy director, and a compliance director. We also have access to their professional resources including claim management and reporting, a resource library, technology guidance, and best practices documents and processes. BAN is a national consortium of independent benefit consultants dedicated to serving their clients well and responsibly.

Ceridian
Our special arrangement with Ceridian can provide discounted payroll services for our clients. Ceridian's payroll processing and human resource solutions serve 25 million employees and 116,000 companies in 45 countries worldwide, including over 50% of the Fortune 500 and 50% of the Financial Times Global 500.

Employers Association, Inc.
Employers Association is a leading provider of human resources consulting, organizational leadership training, HR seminars, and salary surveys for companies in Minnesota and throughout the Midwest. As a business partner of David Martin Agency, Inc., EA offers our clients discounted fees for many of their services.

Leonard Street and Deinard-Employment & Labor Group
We retain an employment law attorney from this prestigious law firm for matters requiring legal opinions and guidance outside the scope of employee benefit consulting.

Nationwide Risk Consulting, Inc.
Our relationship with Nationwide provides assistance in obtaining audits and refunds of overpayments for worker's compensation insurance premiums. They also perform PEO audits and their fees are contingent upon recapturing funds for our clients.

Professional Resource Group (PRG) - website not currently available
We are a member of PRG, a Minnesota group of 14 independent employee benefit advisors representing several thousand employers. We frequently combine resources to provide our clients with informative educational seminars designed to assist compliance of state and federal benefit regulations.

Seaton, Beck & Peters, PA
Through an arrangement with Greg Peters, our clients may receive information through this firm's Labor and Employment Hotline. Seaton, Beck & Peters PA limits its practice exclusively to advising and representing employers in labor and employment matters.

 

Company Initiatives


As an innovator and leader in benefit plan design, David Martin Agency, Inc. has developed several plan initiatives over the years in conjunction with our clients.  Some of these distinctive programs include:

Consumer Directed Health Plans

David Martin Agency, Inc. is a leader in the CDHP market. We helped BCBS of Minnesota design and market the first local HRA plan and implemented our first CDHP in 2003 for a large, multi-state firm. Since then, we have helped many small and large employers learn about HSAs, HRAs, and the rules and regulations that apply to these plans. We have also developed customized employee communication and education campaigns for effective rollouts of CDHPs.

HRA Plans

We implemented two of the first five BCBSM clients with HRA programs. We assisted in the development of the plan materials, ground rules, and processes.

Direct Provider Pay Pilot

We helped a local carrier with their pilot initiative called "pay the provider." This concept pays the provider directly with HRA/HSA funds under a consumer driven health plan as a time-saving convenience for participants.

Wellness Programs

  • Currently, we are building the first pathways between a wellness vendor and a major carrier's disease management vendor to integrate a wellness program. Now both lifestyle coaching and care management services are coordinated under a standards-based wellness program.
  • Our 2007 wellness program designed and implemented for The Schwan Food Company, Inc. has received recognition in the BCBS book Working Well.   In addition, this program received a silver medal from the National Business Group on Health (NBGH), one of only 50 businesses to be recognized for their wellness program.

Performance Guarantee

We obtained the first performance guarantee written for a large local disease management program.

Mandatory Rx

We have the first BCBSM/Prime Therapeutics client with mandatory mail order Rx and also the first BCBSM client using drug step therapy.

Extended Supply Rx Network   We instigated development of the first BCBSM extended supply retail pharmacy network. We also had the first client with a national extended supply Rx network. This concept is now the nationally recognized BCBS "90day Rx" program.
